OUR HISTORY
Oshkosh Mid Morning Kiwanis was chartered in 1974 with 32 members as the third club to charter in Oshkosh. Our sponsoring club was Lakeshore Kiwanis, and the first President was Marty Bankert. During that same year, the club began what would become our longest running service project; The Magic Shows and Food Drive.
In 1987 Kiwanis International voted to accept women into membership. Today our club is made up of about 50% women with the first woman president (Susan Steinhilber) elected in 1996.
2005 saw a new Philanthropic Partnership form when our club began collaborating with the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation to fund Education Grants in the Oshkosh Area School District. Our club has awarded well over $100,000 to teachers since the relationship began.
In 2012 Mid Morning Kiwanis established our own Foundation a 501c3 not for profit organization. Shortly after, we began gifting IPads to children with Autism with over 100 given to date.
We also developed a new type of membership in 2012 when we accepted Communities School at Oshkosh North into our club as a corporate member. This allowed any student in the Communities independent learning program to attend our meetings and report to the club what they were working on. Adult club members are often tapped as an authentic audience for the students or as outside mentors for specific projects. In turn, the students have given their time and support for a number of our projects, including helping staff the EAA Water Sales.
During the COVID19 pandemic beginning in 2020 our club developed what would become our biggest fund raiser to date with NEW Top Dog. During it’s inaugural year we raised over $50,000. In year two, we widened our scope including six animal shelters and grossed over $235.000.
In 2022 we celebrated as we reached 100 IPads given to children with Autism. This program continues to be a diving force in our fundraising efforts as each gift is about a $500 investment which includes the IPad, case, screen protector and software. The Oshkosh School district partners with us by putting the screen protectors on, and the IPad in the case.
